really weird thing ive noticed lately re: hermits getting critiqued for stuff theyve said or done is that as soon as someone holds a shit opinion (even if it's just them being stupid, or a centrist, or saying a bad word without knowing what it means, or whatever) people immediately seem to flock to the 'this guy should die' 'kys' 'why are we giving this person a platform' rhetoric and like. that's not how meaningful change is made?

like, yeah, if one of my beloved CCs posted a tweet or video tomorrow about how much they hate gay people, or believe in conservative ideals, or they just said a bunch of slurs or whatever (these are hyperbolic examples obviously) then yeah, fuck them, they should go rot. but like, having some dumb takes, or saying bad things in the past, doesn't = evil terrible person...

idk, i feel like we can critique content creators without getting so insane about it. like, shit, there are things some of my favourites do that i don't like, but theyre not even really worth bringing up tbh. unless its something actually important, i feel like it just creates more drama out of nothing and all these assholes come crawling out of the woodwork to tell everyone how much they hate that creator. or find their content boring anyway so clearly they have no real merit to anyone.

wait hold on now I am genuinely curious: Why is D-Sides your favourite Gorillaz album? I never vibed with it myself so I am interested in hearing what you like about it that I'm missing out on.

so, i haven't listened to Gorillaz in a long while, nor do i tend to listen to music that actively these days, but i re-listened to the entire album, side 1 and side 2, to try and come up with a reason why i like it so much. i do want to preface and say, yeah, the album (side 1 atleast) is very "plain", there's not a whole lot going on, nor are there any guest artists on any of the songs.

but in listening to the album again, a few things kinda appear in my brain regarding the album. one is that it brings back a set of memories of taking trips to and from Ohio to live with my mother and step-father during a few breaks between high school, and how a lot of the songs in the album i remember heavily listening to while trying to sleep in the back of their car (i'm 6'2", and sleeping horizontally in the back of a moderately small car was. not great). i had the main 6 albums before Humanz installed to my kindle, since Humanz hadn't come out yet as these trips were between... 2014 and 2016. i mainly remember hearing D-Sides the most i feel on those trips, whether it be intentional, or my sleep patterns would have me looping back around to D-Sides... that or i mostly started with D-Sides at the beginning of those trips.

another thing i'm kinda thinking about after having re-listened to the album is how much side 1 kinda reminds me of Boe, in terms of the vibes; there's a lot of somber vibes i get from some songs that fits well for him (Hong Kong and Spitting Out the Demons both being notable songs that remind me of Boe himself, and also of those long trips). side 2 on the other hand, it's remixes remind me a lot of the Sims 2, specifically the console version, as i associate a lot of Sims 2 with it's console selection of music... which is mostly a more heavy focus on the electronic tracks from the PC version; a lot of the remixes feel like something i could hear playing on the radio while i'm controlling my sim around and doing tasks.

last thing, maybe, is that i never hear folks refer to D-Sides as one of their favourites, so maybe that's why i have it as mine. out of respect perhaps.

Happy Sakusa day!! Any headcanons you have for him?

It's not Sakusa day anymore but I really tried guys. I really did. I don't have anything in my brain for him. So everything below is sort of surface level... I havent ever really like thought about him before so this is like a first draft of headcanons.

Fun fact: Sakusa *should* have been my favourite character. Naturally gifted freaks with intense social issues are like my bread and butter. I've written multiple characters that hate being touched or are terrified of getting sick and they're almost always my favourites in media. Why Sakusa never became my favourite is a mystery to me. The moment I saw him I was like "ah yeah cant wait to meet that bitch properly that'll be my favourite" and then it simply did not happen.

Anyway, headcanons!

Nothing in my brain.

I think Sakusa is capable of accidentally manipulating people into doing things for him. Like he's actually not trying to make people do what he wants, but there's something severe about his demeanour and he doesn't leap to speak up, so if he sits in silence long enough whoever he's speaking to will eventually backtrack and end up agreeing with him or doing what he wants. He doesnt understand why everyone he talks to is so weak willed about their opinions. Or why people keep getting things off high shelves for him, he's perfectly tall enough to do it himself.

I think he pretends to hate when people pester him to show off his hypermobility but secretly loves being the centre of attention. Like when people act all shocked or grossed out, he acts annoyed but he actually wants them to keep talking about how much of a freak he is.

I think he is severely mysophobic and struggles day to day with the fear of getting sick, but this isnt the root issue and his actual diagnosis is OCD, which he is medicated for, and with it is an obsessive need to control himself and his health.

And connected to that I think he genuinely does not enjoy having sex, but is not and does not consider himself asexual. It's just a mental hassle and filled with gross fluids, so his sexual escapades are often extremely well thought out and involve a lot of verbal communication, and requires a partner that is fully on board with him being in control of their environment and the speed at which they go. It's a little bit too clinical for a lot of people so he tends to not bother.

Never in his life would this man have a casual relationship. I feel like this is the kind of man who needs a partner who is 100% in on their relationship all the time, I don't think he can tolerate ifs or maybes or people who are unsure of themselves, and cuts them out of his life for being superfluous.

I dont think he likes being hugged or any kind of cuddling. He probably resists romantic relationships because people always want to share a bed with him and he just. Wants control. He doesnt want to have to worry about if someone else is comfortable. Or if they might start touching him in the night by accident. Or if they can hear him breathing.

He has a lot of anxiety that is quickly resolved by simply being alone, but I dont think he has panic attacks or anxiety attacks, I think his anxiety response is anger. Where if something breaks his sense of control over his body or health he gets really mad about it, which has resulted in him (physically) lashing out or shouting at people for innocent mistakes and I think he REALLY doesn't like that uncontrollable side of him, so he tries to overcompensate by not putting himself in a position to feel like that, making him appear more agoraphobic than he actually is.

I can’t understand how Lucien stans dislike Elain but still ship elucien. You want your fav with a character you hate? Uhhh okay. I myself like Lucien but I also love Elain. Do I want him to be happy? Yes. Do I think his happy ending lies with Elain? No. Why would you want your fav with someone who doesn’t like them back? Just so he’ll be “happy”? Thing is though, he won’t be happy because he’ll be in an unrequited relationship (though I don’t believe Lucien loves Elain but he at the very least shows some interest in her). And quite frankly, I don’t think it’s fair to put Lucien’s happiness on Elain. That is NOT her responsibility. I want Elain to be with someone SHE likes and who likes her BACK. Which is why I’m an elriel. I also want that for Lucien. Whether that person for him ends up being Vassa, or someone else, I can’t 100% say. But I do think his stans have nothing to worry about because I believe SJM will give him his happy ending, it just won’t be with Elain🤷‍♀️

Bcs they’re afraid Mass wouldn’t be interested in giving Lucien his own novel otherwise. Best way to make sure he gets his pov? Pair him w a character you know is getting a book, even if you hate her.

The issue w eluciens is they can’t seem to understand the point Sjm was making. Not all mates are perfect for each other. Yes, some couple make it work believing the cauldron paired them for a reason but they’re miserable. Eluciens are literally doing what the rest of the fae culture do. They try to justify why there is a bond between elucien, “the cauldron must have made them mates for a reason!” (Said every depressed mated couples), and how Elain has to give Lucien a chance, how she has to explore the bond to know if its right and wrong. Basically…they’re doing everything Sjm is trying to tell us is wrong.

What I love about Mass’s interview whilst she talks about rejected bonds is - “what if you decide, “eh im not interested”” -> this is for the eluciens that claim elain HAS to explore the bond. No she doesn’t. Especially as she is not interested in her mate. Elain is indifferent towards Lucien & that kills the ship. As for Lucien…everytime he is around Elain, he just isnt himself. Its like he’s withdrawn…he doesnt want Elain, “she was nothing like Jesminda” but out of courtesy, out of societal expectations and how he was brought up, he is trying. Even tho it clearly isnt making him happy. I cannot imagine wanting my favourite character to go through that. Like. Elain was ready to kiss Az whilst Lucien was upstairs. She didnt hesitate, not once mentioned him. And thats fine - she didnt have to after all she doesnt owe him anything but it is a sucky love story for Lucien. His mate only wanting him bcs her first option “rejected” her or was no longer available. Elucien and gwynriel are just terrible love stories and there is no other way to spin it.

Eluciens for some odd reason have completely deluded themselves that Vassien will never happen when they have had more buildup and connections then Elain and Lucien.

vassa & Lucien are both exiles. Both betrayed by their siblings. Lord of Fire & Bird of Flame. Heir to day & firebird at Day. Cursed Queen and A spell cleaver. Both connected to Koshei and his lake. Lucien chuckling w Vassa - with gwynriel thats romantic but with Vassien it apparently means nothing. Lucien having a spark for Vassa. They’re so damn obvious. Oh but ofc they won’t happen as Vassa and Jurian are both humans and “at each other’s throats” bcs God forbid antis having to read another type of couple dynamic thats not “enemies to lovers”

This. Hate Lucien, Love him - he IS important to the Koshei storyline. He’s been around for a long time, im 96% sure Mass will give him his happy ending, it just wont be w the woman he can’t stand being around.

okay i just finished rewatching fma brotherhood and can we please talk about how fuckin 15 ed is. like lots of anime protagonists are 15 but ed is *so* 15.

like- he needs to disguise the car so he makes it into a 15 year olds idea of a really cool car, and its so cringe the adults force him to change it. he makes ling a sword and puts a little skull on the handle (for literally no reason except that he presumably thought it would be cool, even though they were in the middle of getting their asses kicked by envy) and then gets defensive when ling calls it lame. he gets riled up unbelievably easily over NOTHING. his fighting style is scrappy- hes experienced but not disciplined, and he'll use whatevers on hand to get the job done. he'll mess around in the middle of a fight, use unnecessarily flashy moves/weapons, and hes just generally a nuisance in combat. he gets really flustered when people insinuate that winry is his girlfriend, and then when he DOES confess to her 2 years later he uses a fucking alchemy metaphor because hes a NERD.

im saying all of this with affection by the way- hes a cringe 15 year old because 15 year olds are cringe! i feel like most of the time these high school age protagonists are basically just adult characters with more naive ideals, or theyre a bit more emotional, or they have "childish" interests. ESPECIALLY with these high stakes action-adventure stories, where the fate of the world is in their hands. but a kid can have the weight of the world on their shoulders and still handle their emotions poorly, act recklessly, goof off at inappropriate times, and generally think and act in a way that adults wouldnt. and still be mature and competent characters! i mean, ed is a GREAT protagonist. he has a full understanding of the stakes and he knows how and when to get serious. but he also does shit like breaking into a secret government laboratory, alone, in the middle of the night, with no plan, and nearly gets himself killed in the process. because hes a reckless kid! and if he HADNT done that, they never would have found out the enemys plan in time!

and its just so perfectly executed- instead of childish traits being sprinkled on top of adult problem solving and emotional regulation, him being 15 informs how he acts all the time! sometimes this is a good thing because he solves problems in a unique way, and sometimes it causes even MORE problems. its a fundamental aspect of his character that contributes to both his strong and weak points.

and my absolute favourite part is that hes still treated like a person worthy of his title and reputation- not only by the adult characters, but by the narrative itself. but he isnt treated like an adult either! the adults around him dont talk down to him, but they also dont have adult expectations of him. theres a whole bit about how the adults shouldnt stand by while the children are on the battlefield- insinuating that while the children are worthy of standing on the battlefield alongside them, they also feel some responsibility to lead them since theyre the adults. which is super reasonable! its probably the best take on adult mentor figures for child main characters ive ever seen.

and yeah theres an argument to be made that it was pretty fucked up of mustang to recruit ed to the military at 12 years old. but he was super upfront with him about what it would entail and didnt force him into it. so watching it as an adult, yeah, its fucked up. but the target audience is kids and thats how kids want to be treated! yeah its a lot of responsibility, but ed knew that going in AND he has a huge support network of trustworthy adults who are looking out for him. hes fine. and hes DEFINITELY better off than most high school age protagonists, who are just sort of thrust into high stakes, life-threatening situations with little guidance. the dynamic is less "you are The Chosen One who will singlehandedly save the world" and more "i mean you certainly have the skills and we really appreciate you working with us but what the fuck is a child doing in the military. who authorized this?? youre going to get yourself killed PLEASE be more careful!" and like. if youre gonna have a show about a 15 year old saving the world, then thats definitely the way to do it.

and what really seals the deal is how pissed ed gets when people treat him like a kid. thats the most 15 year old thing ever! he FEELS like hes being talked down to and disrespected just because hes not given the same expectations and responsibilities as the adults. watching it as a 20 year old im super impressed by the way the adults treat ed, but i can also understand why ed gets so frustrated. its the nature of being a teenager and thinking you can handle more than you can. which really just solidifies how fuckin 15 he is

btw im not saying ed is the only well written teenager in the show. hes just the clearest example- hes so LOUD about who he is and it makes it really easy to talk about his character traits. also hes like my favourite character ever and i just have to talk about him. so like al and the rest are also really convincing kids, and a lot of this stuff kind of applies to all of them! im just talking about ed because i want to lmfao

i imagine them to have a complicated boss-worker relationship. while d16 works in the mines as usual she cant help but sneak appreciative glances at elita. she is a strong leader, responsible and determined but also very cute in ds eyes. all the qualities d admires in a bot. orion knowing d too well teases her for having such an unrealistic crush, even joking to reveal ds feelings to elita.

because of this d16 tries very hard to reach the top ranks in the mines, not only to impress her boss but also becuase in ds mind that would bring them closer, in a sense. at least in ranks.

while d pines heavily from a distance, never having the guts to actually say something, elita is completely unaware of all this. she simply assumes d16 is a hard worker by nature, admiring her drive. elita also views d as a close friend at most, but nothing more.

elita is also cogged in this au bcs very tall femmes are my favourite flavour (something something sentinel rewarded her with a cog for her great work idk this isnt the point either way d is a shorter butch who both literally and figuratively looks up to elita)

d16s feelings eventually get so deep and so bad for the pink femme that she finally forces herself to try flirting with her. wanting to be more than just coworkers or friends. but elita being too busy and too focused on making sure nothing goes wrong in the mines reads ds attempts as playful or friendly banter, sometimes even waving her off completely having other more important things to attend to. leaving ds spark crushed each time but not fully defeated.

orion hates seeing her best friend keep being overlooked like this but also knows theres nothing she can really do to help. even if she tried setting the two up elita is quite literally out of their league. no point in even trying.

d is so desperate for any kind of attention from elita that even a passing "good job" that isnt meant to mean much else or a pat on the shoulder will make d16s whole week. in the moment d16 will try and hide the effect elitas praise has on her, holding back from grinning like an idiot but later that same day will yap orions ear off about it, gushing all star struck at elitas small gestures which give d hope at something more potentially - or hopefully - sprouting in the future.

Hello!! We’ve really been enjoying your fic and wanted to ask a few things, and ramble :p

1. Were there any works (be it original fiction or fanfics) that inspired Playback? Because the SI ‘genre’ (don’t have a better word for it haha) is very broad and well tread and we find your exploration of it very interesting.

2. We were actually somewhat wary of the idea of Freeze Frame for half a second but the way you’re able to utilize it in the narrative is very interesting and well thought out, it balances out well with the characters. But to get to the point: How did the balance out the technique with the story so well?

Uhh… now other stuff :3

SI-ya is a very enjoyable character! Don’t know why but we read him as a very flat affected midwestern guy, with the type of accent you’d hear from Michigan/Indiana.

aaah what a sweet ask ! i'll endeavour to answer it all as best as i can, i love answering these sorts of meta questions they're a real treat for me !!! also its late and im up for my unstoppable editing a chapter at 3am grind so this may not be super coherent and its way too long sorryyyy

1. in regards to other fics - i'm admittedly more a 'time travel fix-it' guy than a SI-genre guy! they so rarely ever click with me in a way i enjoy, and im always sad when the SI isnt like, a fleshed out OC with their own history and whatnot. the only one i can think of that i really enjoyed was cleaning crew ! but i found the JJK fandom played around with them in really fun ways to me (even if i haven't had a ton of time to read a lot).

the tag on playback that denotes it came to me in a dream isn't a joke - i stayed up till like 5am reading all of a gentler world in one sitting, and had the most vibrant dream ive had in months, which the base plot of later became playback.

said dream will one day be written out when it isn't a major spoiler. lmao.

but @ the oc-focus bit, it may be more apt to say i draw off of other time-travel media in how the narrative interacts with the character - a study of resonance and a shot in the dark are some different-fandom favourites of mine that probably influenced me in some way shape or form, and pokemon mystery dungeon: explorers of sky shaped my brain in a way i will never recover from.

2. when it comes to balance, a part of it is very centered in like ... approach, for me. SIya is by nature a thoughtful character who approaches things methodically, and while i started with a very faint idea for freeze frame i let the drawbacks of it come to me as i fleshed him out - drawbacks that would be actual drawbacks catered to the character, and ones he may eventually be able to use to his own benefit. he's the type of smart guy who could probably find some use in its increased resistance and lack of air circulation, but he's also the type of guy to be constantly exhausted because he pushes himself to his limits constantly. he feels responsible for the whole world, and i wanted freeze frame as an ability to both enable and worsen that feeling. the character himself is also a counter to it - he's not the sort to use it wildly or irresponsibly in the way others might. its balanced with the story because it IS the story! SIya the oc and SIya the character themes are inseparable from freeze frame and the story is built for that.

3. midwestern SIya is so funny. everyone ive talked to pictures him with an entirely different accent but all agree he sounds super flat and like. average. its hysterical to me. real bland energy that transcends language. average generic guy voice

i'm really glad people enjoy it so much! i really wasnt at all expecting this much feedback and it's super motivating. it's been nice to have something to focus on aside from the upcoming storm ;w; with any luck, everything will be fine and i'll come back swinging with like 8 new chapters

WHY BUT OF COURSE (sorry this took so long ^^;)

kanako is one of my absolute favourites in the cast because shes the character that to me brought what i like in the franchise into focus in full form. while there were hints of political satire in touhou starting around the tail end of the ninth game and its following spinoff literature, it wasnt until i reached the tenth mainline title that i really fell in love with touhou, and the driving force of that change was yasaka kanako.

kanako is such a fun character to me because her very concept is so compelling, and its delivered in an extremely satisfying way. she is a god who treats religion like running a business, and is pragmatic to every end. this is both one of her greatest strengths and a source of literally all of her issues. everything about kanako is a vignette that illustrates how her capitalistic drive for innovation creates the troubles she faces in advancing further toward her goals, and her misunderstanding of spirituality as an economic problem to be solved for efficiency creates roadblocks for her lifestyle that she is entirely, confidently blind to.

once again i have to stress, this does seem to work for her in some aspects! when she took over leadership of the suwa shrine, she did so by being calculating and planning ahead against anything suwako had up her arsenal, then sweetened the deal for both of them by offering a compromise (sharing residence as the local kami, with suwako acting as the native god and kanako being the face of the shrine who gets the worship). she made a judgment call by choosing to move the shrine from the outside world to gensoukyou when she realized that it was no longer feasible for her and her company to rely on worship from outside world humans. all of these things are demonstrably good business decisions made in the name of keeping her livelihood as a shinrei stable. however, after she moves into gensoukyou with her wife and daughter, she begins to get, well, greedy isnt the right word, but...

capitalism is a force that has to inherently grow, as that is what its entire existence encourages. so what happens when you introduce an individual whose skill is in her capitalistic business prowess into a society that has no knowledge of it? you get kanakos assumption that she needs to introduce it into their culture. she could always have more people worship her. so she tries outperforming her competing... shrines. what would make me a better god? what would prove im more fit to lead gensoukyous humans? these things start running through kanakos head very very quickly. and it isnt out of self-importance either (unlike certain other religious leaders in gensoukyou cough cough miko), she just sees it as the natural extension of running her shrine.

but of course, when you introduce capitalism into a culture, you Introduce Capitalism Into A Culture. in kanakos pursuit of refining her worshipers into customers, she makes it clear to others in her field that there is even a race for power at all. her insistence to assert her presence in gensoukyou through gaining human worshipers via the hakurei shrine alerts reimu to her as someone who is influencing the status quo in the first place. her arms race for nuclear fusion (of which she is the only participant) is directly responsible for the introduction of the myouren temple to gensoukyou, which in turn leads to the introduction of miko and her band of taoists. not to mention her many, many unnecessary entrepreneurial ideas she comes up with in the print works (although they seem much more respectable when shown side-by-side with the anarcho-capitalist schemes of the kappa). these things never would have threatened her position had she not attempted to expand her reach.

in one sense, this is a huge character flaw for her. however, the other side of this coin means that no matter the conflicts kanako brings about for herself, she always views it as inevitable; something that is bound to happen over time regardless, and just another stepping stone on her business ventures. this aspect of her is what i find most interesting—her complete inability to see the big picture in her endless strive for religious success is somehow her most reliable asset. its what makes kanako wonderful to me, and endlessly engaging even after almost two decades since her introduction.

The Villains of Skulduggery Pleasant 2

Now before I start, I want to point out that Book 2 has an absolute myriad of Bad Guys™.

The book introduces not only Dusk (who is great at making everyones day just a whole lot worse. Just fun to be around. Only bit Valkyrie, killed the Lord Vampire of Dublin™ Moloch and is generally just... So much fun!), but also the whole Diablerie Subplot (oh look, China is getting a backstory upgrade), Billy-Ray motherfucking Sanguine (who is in one way or another responsible for a third of my favourite quotes from the books), the Torment and Roarhaven (and all that bullshit), the reflection quite literally cracking (this could never possibly become important later on), the whole Faceless One dimension and whatever was going on with Thurid Guild.

So uh, yeah. Book 2, for being actually quite short in comparison to the absolute Grimoires Derek would later be known to write, is a dense friggin book. You might ask yourself "Wow, this sure is a whole lot more dense than the first one" and thats because Landy had at this point already won and be nominated for enough awards that his writing adventures would be a solid thing for him.

The first book was a leap of faith, the second was the beginning of a saga.

(Tangent: I personally think Landy plans and writes books in pairs of threes, as even Phase 2 was originally supposed to be nine but then turned into six books by force of publisher. Because I read them on a Kindle, I am very much aware of how much longer they have gotten with each installment and I think that he, like many an author, would absolutely benefit from cutting down some of the sizes of his books. But book 2 is still very much on the shorter end, if not the second shortest book of the series).

So, after all these absolute bangers of villains, who will I focus on? The one that dies (which is honestly how I think I should do these. Just slowly talk about everyone who actually dies and leave the "I will appear in a trillion books" villains for last, in favor of my sanity).

Baron Vengous.

In a world filled with sarcastic, silly villains, Vengous is the stern military guy that doesnt talk a lot.

And I mean that literally. Besides like... One or two speeches the guy just doesnt talk much.

Ive managed to complete Book 7 in my reading insanity and have read up to 13 before that (reading them as they come out) and I can say with a solid 78% conviction that he is the most "normal" villain and antagonist the series has ever had.

Hes straightforward. Hes methodical. His status as a General of Mevolent is based not only in honestly insane levels of power, but in his pure military might brain and body.

Baron Vengous is the absolute most opposite anyone could have written to Serpine. He almost seems specifically written to oppose him in as many ways as possible. If Serpine was the Vibe, Vengous is the Antivibe.

You get my point.

We actually get an in depth look into him later (where? Leibniz. In terms of trouble, always assume Leibniz) and even among those people, he is somewhat normal. Apart from his wife.

Oh and the other character trait he has. What was that again? I can barely remember.

Ah. Right. Faceless One fanaticism to the point of self destruction.

It makes you wonder what he did after the Amnesty, as he is broken out of prison by Sanguine at the beginning of the book and its never quite explained why. Serpine was just vibin' in his castle. Maybe he did some human sacrifices to his beloved gods and got caught for it. Who knows. (Afaik, its never explained what he did after the Amnesty to end up in prison in the first place and at this point, Im convinced it doesnt really matter and was just a neat way to introduce Sanguine).

But Vengous just isnt a very... Interesting character. He only works so well because Sanguine is a delight anywhere he shows up and Dusk is just utterly terrifying. The Baron is almost too normal among them.

You need proof? Fine. Let me grab my Kindle real quick.

Alright, so. Vengous first appearance (Chapter 3: Vengous) paints him as the man in control, the guy who has been in prison for eighty years (Im sure cellphones blew his mind) is out and looking for revenge. He doesnt say a lot. His first actual words are "You're late." to Dusk (who he later points out in his internal dialogue isnt even a man to him). This gives us two insights into his character: First, his stoic mentality. He just murdered someone. Hes entirely calm. Lifes are a casualty to him. And second, he holds enough power or reputation that a very skilled vampire is not only working for him, but accepts being talked down to by this man.

Later in Chapter Ten: The Armour, Sanguines inner dialogue says "The Baron was not a man to be trifled with, especially at a time like this". Once again, we have a whole chapter that shows of several things (passively) about the Baron. He is a planner (shown by his knowledge of the armor and its requirements, the supposed knowledge of where Vile died and his general tactical demeanour being described), he is someone who seems to be in control at all times (shown by him casually watching a bunch of infected under Dusks command dig away) and he is incredibly patient (shown in previous chapters by him being able to wait 80 years and then just "get on with it. Sure, hes mad at Sanguine, but his plans are more important).

And then we add something a little spicy in the mixture: Hes not only a fanatic, hes also an asshole. Ooooohoho.

Its Chapter 18 in which our Protagonists finally meet him and he simply despises Skulduggery. But thats not whats actually interesting. The Chapter reveals him to be self important. Sure, hes a leader, stoic, goal oriented. But hes also cocksure of himself. (A trait he shares with about 84% of all characters in the SP universe).

Skulduggerys taunts go right over him.

"Skulduggery nodded. "So, you married or something? Do I hear the pitter patter of tiny evil feet?"

"I will destroy you."

Normal reaction, ey? The scene goes on quite a while longer than that, but only hammers home this point even more.

The Baron believes himself superior. Righteous. Blessed, probably.

What kills him in the end? His self importance. And how does he react to his death?

"But... But this isnt how Im supposed to die", He said weakly. "Not... Not like this. Not by your hand. You're... You're an abomination."

And then he crawls towards the actual abomination he summoned, pleads it to tell them (the Faceless Ones) that hes sorry for failing them.

The Grotesquery moved its hand so that it touches Vengous' face. It looked almost tender, until the hand gripped and wrenched and the Barons head snapped to one side.

Vengous is a fascinating villain, because he stands calmly among the flashy and vibrant. In a long line of batshit insane people, his insanity is the one that hits closest to home. Many, many villains in the future would be obsessed with religion (the Necromaner Temple, the whole Diablerie plot, later on Darquesse). But all of them are so overpainted, so saturated, that many are just that: A mockery of real life fanaticism.

And the Baron still feels like someone who is rootes in reality. He truly believes that he and the Faceless Ones are superior. His last act is - and I cannot stress this enough - apologising to his gods.

This man. This stoic, straightforward man. This absolute unit. Former General of Mevolent. Words like a scalpel, tactician, wit and gumption combined.

Hes just as insane as all of them. But his insanity is so much quieter. So much more refined.

And that makes him scary.

While I would like to end here, lets summarise real quick:

Vengous has mostly two traits that make him stand out: Straightforwardness and Fanaticism.

Hes a pretty boring villain in comparison to his counterparts.

He is - at least in my opinion - one of the most realistic villains in the series. His insanity is believable and while its not as flashy as those of others, its a kind of insane that makes your skin crawl as soon as you think about it.

He stole Skulduggerys Armor. If you know that Skulduggery is Vile, there are some really interesting scenes that allude to it.

His Leibniz counterpart, for once, seems to actually improve on the OG one. He talks more and he even shows a certain twisted kindness to Valkyrie in explaining her everything. I would almost argue that the Baron of Leibniz is more interesting than the OG Baron. Also, silly wife Eliza. Such a stupid joke.

If he had been succesful, he would have actually ruined the world. Legitimately. The stakes were so high and the man remained so calm. Imagine trying to resurrect your gods. Imagine resurrecting Jesus, all the while having the vibes of a Military Dad with PTSD.

Im afraid that I never found Vengous that compelling. The writing in Book 2 is immaculate though and Dusk and Sanguine are amazing.

I give him a... 7? 8 out of 10?

Also: remember to stay hydrated. Eat a snack. Stretch. You deserve it.

Eclipse in progress part 2

Okay so I've only seen two more episodes and I kind of had in my head I'd watch till the end of 8 before writing anymore because I have the time but episode 7 just one two suckerpunched my feelings so I need to go regulate.

I had forgotten about Namo he could also have stolen the diary and I think logistically this makes mroe sense because he is in a different year level so not expected to be in class BUT where did he get the key? Whereas Thua being class president potentially gives him key acces idk and I still feel like there's more layers

We still really haven't gotten background on anyone which is why I wasn't going to post yet so my theories havent changed much except

Did both Ayan and his uncle have a necklace? I'm really unsure about whether or not Ayan legit saw his suicide or has just vividally imagined it but n the dreams they're both wearing it whereas I had previously assumed Ayan was wearing his uncles necklace.

Namo also seems to genuinely believe in the curse so where did this rumour come from, I don't feel like it's NEW, did Akk hear it and just capitalise on it? or has someone else being doing this in the past? Is it passed down from the head prefect

also Khan and Wat are prefects were they indoctrinatinated by candelight??

1984 stuff was WAY LESS SUBTLE than I was expecting when Akk first found that book

Ayan convincing Akk he needs to 'tell the truth' and Akk being woried about his family and his reputation is obviously legit but also feels like a coming out metaphor ngl

Khan thinking Ayan is playing with Akk and Thua but gently confronting it rather than getting jealous made me appreciate him even more

ALSO THE POWER DYNAMICS in the framing of Ayan and Neo’s convo on the stairs, Neo is SO MUCH HIGHER and yet from the loew position Ayan managed to be confident and understanding.

🍓 How did you get into writing fanfiction?

By loving the story so much I wanted to be in it, lol. My first few attempts at writing ff were with self-insert OCs, but that was in my native language and mostly unpublished. Im trying to recycle some of those ideas, but Im not sure how will it go.

As for fics written in english and without OCs - like everyone else, by reading other fics.

If we count the first few attempts - I took a look at my docs and counted 7 fandoms. Some parts of those were published somewhere on the web but I genuinely forgot about their existence.

If we count fics published recently on tumblr/ao3 - only HP.

🍈 How many years have you been writing fanfiction?

Technically? A decade. But idk if that counts if it wasnt published and probably never will be and had self insert OCs.

I started writing my first fics in english after I got into that one fandom which was during the pandemic, so that would be around 3-4 years - but posting since… December 2023.

🍎 Do you read or write more fanfiction?

Definitely read.

🍌 What is one way you've improved as a writer?

Trying to fit too many things into one project that do not fit bc they are too self indulgent or just bad writing bc require sacrificing either plot or characterization. Being too ambitious, having too much plot that needs too much effort to make it make sense, and will not pay off bc nobody will read it (bc idk if i will ever finish it. and if i do it will not be written in english).

Just one? There are so many weird things Ive been researching or googling.

Did they have 3-in-1 shampoos in 1979. Language of flowers. What the ancient roman beds looked like. Names and their meanings. Ancient roman’s attitude towards (homo)sexuality. Phosphorus and phosphorescence (this was literally to check if this one sentence in canon is factually correct). Did ancient romans have pets. Different gems’ looks, usage and meanings. Ancient Roman dog names. Different astronomical events / discoveries in years 1975-1980 and in year 1957. Layout of certain types of houses.

Any comment is a nice comment <3 tho I like to be let known the person felt something while reading bc its still so abstract and bizzare for me that it happens 😅

🍐What's the most fringe trope/topic you write about?

As you can see from the research question I have an ancient roman au wip. I was genuinely surprised there were only a few ancient roman aus in the marauders fandom.

This one published wip is about a surprise pregnancy that isnt immediately regarded as great news and celebrated (which i think isnt a common way of approaching the topic.) I also wanted to write sth about abortion and miscarriage but i dont know if I will get around to actually writing those.

And Im trying to recycle my old OC-focused long fic which also is deeply unpopular (i understand why but also i feel like im fighting in the trenches)

🥭What is the hardest type of story for you to write?

Thats about something. Has a deeper meaning and everyone in the comments talk about how deeply they were moved by it. Or how clever the plot was. Or how the deeply and insightfully the characters are analysed. Or how beautiful the language is. Or. Like. Is written and finished and publishable.

🍏What is the easiest type?

All I know is funny dialogue, self indulgent fluff and this one type of hurt/comfort that is also super self indulgent. Also putting all the effort into fitting in as many references / easter eggs as you can that i know nobody will notice.

🍑Where do you do your writing? What platform? When?

On my laptop, usually sitting at my desk, or on the balcony if the weather permits, whenever I feel like ignoring the things im supposed to be doing instead, I guess.

So far I’ve been using google docs but I’ll be probably moving on from them in the nearest future. For organizing ideas/wips and short fics I use Notion - its good for organizing but not that good as a writing program.

🍋What is something you've been too nervous/ intimidated to write, but would love to write one day?

Smut, lol. Also more taboo topics like abortion and miscarriage mentioned above.

🍇What made you choose your username?

I translated my first ever username to English. ok, no, my first ever username was Leila Moonlight and i still think its pretty but now i also think its cringe. Tho I was - what? - 11? 12? So maybe I can be forgiven that it looks like a HP character. Nocturnal Phantom - the username actually use now - is still a bit cringe, I picked it bc I was a night owl (lol) and tried to lean into this nighttime-spooky aesthetic, but also its tumblr so im embracing it. I recently picked a nickname Nyx for my mutuals' convenience - and that is the greek goddess of the night. I commit to the bit.

Siblings (Character Introduction)

JOSHUA OYINTOKONI He's kinda the opposite of Jennifer, his younger sister. Jennifer is like 20 yrs old while he is 32. You see in terms of being the opposite of Jennifer, Jennifer is strange and odd in almost every way while this guy who is her brother is pretty much normal in everyway plus loves to talk about the weather lol his favourite channels to watch are also the weather but anyway he is a pretty timid kinda guy who frequently trips over himself quite a lot. Although similar to his sister he is pretty calm and loves drinking tea. He is also hardworking to an extreme especially because he knows he's the only one that has to provide for the family, the "family" being just him and Jennifer alone as they are both orphans. I also don't think he appears in the show a lot because he is always busy at work even on weekends so basically he's quite the workaholic.

ELLA LEE She has a similarity with her brother in terms of temper as she gets infuriated sometimes however I think most of the time she's actually pretty happy and also talks A LOT, she is also VERY annoying like your usual annoying little sister and the person affected and annoyed the most by this is her brother who is pretty cold to her most of the time tho slightly less harsher than he is cold to others plus there are some rare times where he is sweet to her as she's still his sister anyway Ella is very immature and her favourite past time is playing with plushies whether it be tea parties or whatever also she's 10 yrs old.

AMARACHI CHUKWU Ngozi's (the main character and my oc) little sister who is also 10 although she doesn't behave like your average little girl as her favourite past time is watching the news, solving crossword puzzles and also solving regular puzzles and reading newspapers as she's a pretty clever little girl. She is opposite from Ngozi and basically her entire family(which is just ngozi and her uncle) in every single way as she is wise, is responsible, isn't obsessed with money, doesn't like and gets annoyed with displays of stupidity and often says things about them, her only friend is Ella, she also sometimes hangs out with Bola(my oc) and doesnt really mind her company anyways, ngozi also really loves her and is protective of her, I won't say she doesn't like her older sister as that would be a tad too harsh but shes just isnt fond of her personality and her frequent stupid acts that tend to put people in danger. She also doesn't smile much and doesn't express feelings much but there are sometimes where she does. She was inspired by Mandy from the grim adventures of billy and Mandy btw. She also does pretty well in school.

HELLO I come with news!!

I was delivering some food via my interstellar food delivery service and the delivery address was Skaro!! I was a bit surprised because I had picked up the food from a lovely indulgent mom-and-pop shop a few planets away, and I hadn’t ever considered that people on Skaro would want comfort food!

But anyways, I delivered it of course (I take my job as an interplanetary food delivery person very seriously) and who would have thunk it, the orderer was Davros!! It took a while to get to his quarters, since Skaro isn’t super friendly to visitors and I had to dodge laser-fire left and right on my way to Davros’ place. But once I got there, he was v pleased to see me (or the food, more accurately). He explained that he doesn’t really eat often, if at all, but he learned that his favourite rabbit loves a certain type of food and so he instantly placed an order for all varieties of that food type!!

As I was unpacking the food from the state-of-the-art delivery bag (which puts the temperature, texture, and freshness of the food in stasis so that you never get a soggy delivery, and so that it’s always exactly how it should be. Consistency is key), I was surprised at how eager Davros was to talk about you. He really seemed to have a special place in his heart for you!

He also made sure to check the food for tampering and safety, of course. He didn’t remove it from its stasis (apparently he was preparing it for a surprise date later that evening and wanted it to stay fresh for you) but he scanned it within an inch of its life to make sure it was safe. No poisons, no toxins, no textures that he knows you hate. Once he was sure, he paid me and sent me on my way. I kind of expected to be killed, tbh, just based on his reputation, but honestly it seemed like he was in a really pleasant mood because he was thinking and talking about you.

Phew! Glad I survived :P

The post you made about Astarion being the fan fave. Have you ever considered... thats not an issue? Like ever? At all? I dont even play BG3 but after being in several fandoms where theres always been a small cluster of people that arent interested in the fan favorite and do nothing but constantly shit the bed over others all enjoying the popular characters, I just think its stupid. What do you expect as a solution - everyone forcing themselves to try and change their favorite and their blogs to please you, a complete stranger? Why would they? Do you not see the entitlement...? This isnt something like an area of scientific research getting neglected. Its fandoms on tumblr, and people enjoying something harmless. The only one who would benefit here is you and a few others that like the less popular characters - but you dont *need* to benefit. It would be nice if you did but if you dont get to, thats life. You are not entitled to a high volume of fics, artwork, posts etc that center around your fave. At all. Its not an issue that youre not getting that, creators will make what they will and people are allowed to enjoy certain aspects of a media most of all that you dont. Their fun isnt about you. It sucks for you, I do empathize that it must feel frustrating, but get over it. People dont need to change their fave and creative outputs all for your sake. And you can always commission if you feel so entitled to. But otherwise all of this stuff is free content people make primarily for themselves and those who feel the same.

Good lord what a shitty uncalled for response to one (1) meme. Let’s start from the beginning. First of all, “it’s not an issue”, do you really think the fact that the only poc character in the main cast getting almost no attention from the majority of fans is “not an issue”? You really don’t see the problem here? But like… it’s not like my post was a call to action of some sort, I hardly “shat the bed” as you so eloquently put it, it’s a meme. It’s a funny meme my guy. If you don’t find it funny that’s okay! But like you said, you don’t need to! It’s not all about you :)

And like the thing is, wyll isn’t even my favourite character. I like him a lot, I like all the characters, but he’s not my favourite. I just noticed the disparity in attention and thought, huh, that sucks, ill make a meme about it. It’s kind of incredible the extent to which you managed to miss the point of my post.

And also I… never said anyone can’t enjoy anything? Again, I hardly said anything, this is over one (1) meme. But I enjoy all the characters, you can take a look at my posts and see astarions one of my favourites, I certainly haven’t stopped enjoying content around him, why would I think anyone else should.

End of the day my meme was just a bit of fun. I do think there’s a wider issue about the treatment of black characters in fandom, but there was no malice intended towards anyone and I think people should enjoy what they enjoy, just be aware. The fact that you saw my post and read so much into it that wasn’t there and wrote me this very hostile message says a lot more about you than it does about me.
